Vicksburg Historical Society Programs
Not all of these programs will be held at the Historic Village Depot, but unless otherwise stated they will begin at 7:00 p.m., with the actual location to be announced, closer to the date of the event.
Tuesday, May 19 – A potluck dinner combined with an ice cream social on the grounds of the Historic Village. Program would center upon the street names in the village of Vicksburg and why they were named that way, featuring Maggie Snyder’s research.
Tuesday, June 16 – History of the Vicksburg Bronson Hospital, formally Franklin Memorial Hospital, including the old Pioneer Days festival. It will be held at the current hospital meeting room with sponsorship by Bronson. We will honor Marilyn Durham who with her husband Sheldon, were the major fund raisers for the new building.
Tuesday, July 21 – A history of the Vicksburg Ambulance Service. We will honor Anna Brown and others who were instrumental in starting the ambulance service.
Tuesday, August 11 – The history of Homer Stryker, founder of the Stryker Corporation in Kalamazoo. Dave Hager and Dr. Brenneman who wrote the book about Dr. Stryker will be the featured speakers. The meeting will be held at Strong School on the grounds of the Vicksburg Historic Village.
Tuesday, September 15 – The Polish Heritage in Vicksburg. Descendents of the first families to come here will be part of the panel as the Vicksburg Historical Society presents its Tuesday, September 15 program at 7:00 p.m. at the Vicksburg Community Center. They each have their own stories to tell about what life was like working in the mill and later on, going to school in the old “Red Brick”.
Saturday, October 10 (10 a.m. - 7 p.m.) – Fall Harvest Festival. Antique market ~ Farmers market ~ Old-time craft exhibitors ~ Antique harvest equipment ~ Music ~ Food ~ Children’s games ~ Magician ~ Storyteller ~ Pumpkin carving contest ~ Scavenger hunt ~ Pie baking contest.
Tuesday, November 17 – Sunset Lake: Then and Now. A program concerning the history, management and water (riparian) rights of Sunset Lake intended to increase appreciation for how Vicksburg’s history and well-being has been tied to that of Sunset Lake. A brief historical overview will be followed by insight from panelists intimately involved with lake-related issues over the years. The Village of Vicksburg has been invited to participate, along with Kent McCauley who now is partnering with the new owners of the old paper mill which has historically owned the water rights.
Saturday, December 5 – Bake Sale. Promote a progressive bake sale with the other three or four entities that have bake sales scheduled on the same day. It is hoped that each location would specialize in a particular kind of baked good. It’s possible, the United Methodist Church would have a bazaar at the church to complement the activities. To attract an audience we would have a big cake on a float in the parade to advertise.
